Moments ago at 5:30pm, on the Mecam Auction televised on Discovery HD, they sold a 63 Supercharged Avanti that was reportedly Egbert's and ran 167 at Bonneville. It sold for $75,000. This was in Kissimmee, FL.

It was the maroon red with square headlights. It also had the Halibrand wheels. They said it was well-documented, also - and "possibly the most valuable Avanti".

That's a lot of money for a R3 conversion, even owned by Egbert. It's not one of the Nine factory cars s far as I know.

I had to laugh when the (uninformed) announcers were gabbing about the car and said that with the R3 engine, the car hit 167.xx mph. The other guy piped up and says "yes and with the R4 it would hit 180"...

Serial number R-4130,built on April 18,1963. It was sent to the engineering department and was used for the proposed running changes for the 1964 models. It was converted to an R-3 by the Granatellis.

Bob,

The website pictures don't show a good closeup of the wheels, were they painted at all or just patina'd magnesium w/polished spinner? What was the condition of the rest of the car?

In reviewing what some other cars went for today, I'd say the buyer got a very good deal, at least a 30-35% discount to what it would take to duplicate that car today.

If it's the one pictured in the newer posts, that's Avanti Red. The maroon was just that; it couldn't have been mistaken for a red.
