As an avid car collector, vehicles like this Avanti come up once in a lifetime. It is an original low mileage survivor, that has always been garaged and has been maintained in excellent mechanical condition. It has been documented that this Avanti was used as one of the promotional cars by Sears to introduce Allstate Radial tires in 1964. When I purchased the car in December of 2006, the original 6.70x15 Sears Radial whitewall tires were still on the car. The original tires would be excellent for display but I replaced them with 6x15 rims and 215/75 R15 tires. The original tires/rims come with the car. The spare tire is the original with the blue covering still on the whitewall. The vehicle had 4524 documented mileage but really had not been driven in 15 years, but just started on occassion. All chrome is in like new condition as is the interior. The paint is all original, even to the duller color in the engine compartment and rear trunk lip. Paint is in excelent condition with some minor door nicks and some light scratches in various places. To keep the absolute originality of the car I left these minor imperfections as is. Upon purchase of the car I had all hoses/belts/fluids replaced, all brake lines replaced, Car ran well after tune-up with no drivetrain noise and transmission shifted perfectly. All gauges work, except intermittent clock. AM radio works, sounds fine. All interior lights work and car was never smoked in. Seats, carpets, door panels, headliner, all glass as new. I anticipated to drive the car to the Studebaker meet in South Bend in June of 2006. I was approached by the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, NY to have the car on display for a Raymond Loewy exhibition from April to late March and I gladly agreed. My trip to South Bend in June was mostly uneventful, but car was running a little warm when in traffic or if the temperature was over 80 degrees. Normal operating temperature was never over 180 degrees but on this trip it reached 200 degrees. I brought the car into a classic car service center and the viscous clutch was replaced and the car has never run warm again. If you were at the event in South Bend the temperatures reached the high nineties. While I did not enter the car for judging, I did display the car, and I did have a surprise when I saw the sister car to this one that a gentlemen trailered from Arizona and it had approximately 4500 miles on his vehicle. The histories were about the same and he actually looked at the car I purchased before he found this trailer queen. I have had many classic cars, but part of my enjoyment is to drive them. My Avanti drives handles/performs as new. Upon my return drive to Long Island, I noticed hesitation in accelerating and the car developed a slight oil leak from the rear engine seal. I wanted to keep the car in the excellent mechanical condition as the cosmetic, so I had the carburetor rebuilt and had all seals. main-rear, and head gasket replaced. Quite an expensive bill but this car is worth it. This car has absolutely no rust on the frame/hog troughs or the frame support behind the rear wheel. This is a car to purchase and enjoy and needs nothing! The current mileage is 9764 and should remain around this mileage. I have all documentation including the built sheet which had seat belt delete, but I added original seat belts before my road trip to South Bend. Feel free to call me with any questions or if you want to come see the car.
