This auction is for a
1984 one owner Avanti with less than 11,000 original miles. Here's your
chance to own an exceptional low mileage, fiberglass bodied automotive
icon that has always been garaged and never been in ice or snow. This
car has all original components except battery, air conditioning
compressor, and upgraded electric radiator fan assembly to replace the
flawed factory desgin. This Avanti has factory installed Chevrolet 5
liter V-8 and is equipped the same as exterior of car shown in the
factory advertising-Black exterior, Dayton Wire Wheels, Moonroof, but
has Red Leather interior, Ricaro Seats, Nardi Leather wrapped steering
wheel and Blaupunkt Radio and cassette receiver.
The Avanti was conceived and manufactured by Studebaker as a
fiberglass four passenger sports car to bolster the image and sales of
Studebaker. The car was the idea of company president Sherwood Egbert
and he hired the famous industrial engineer Raymond Loewy to surpervise
the design of the car.
When Studebaker closed the US plant, Nate Altman and partner Leo
Newman, South Bend Studebaker dealers, saved the car by purchasing the
rights, equipment and parts. Production of the Avanti II began in 1965
in port of the fromer Studebaker complex. The business survived for
almost 18 years and during that period the car remained relatively
unchanged except that it was redesigned to utilize Chevrolet drive
components. A group headed by Stephen Blake in 1983 purchased the
company and Blake updated the interior, introduced a convertible model,
and put Avantis into racing with moderate success. Unfortunately,
Blake's ambitious approach forced the frim into bankruptcy shortly
after this car was produced. This is one of the last Avanti's with the
original frame and body design and one of the last made in the original
plant.
Car is not a 100 point show car--it is not without flaws but we
consider this an exceptional auto for its age and retains many
items only available from a well cared for low miles original.
Known defects include:
- Some nicks and clouding of paint especially on the roof and above
the trunk. In the sunlight it is difficult to see these but in
some light conditions it is apparent.
- Stress cracks on front fender which is typical on Avanti of this time period.
- Small tear in center of rear seat and a small portion of the
passenger seat has been recovered in vinly. Factory provided additional
leather matching the interior is included with the car.
- Poor reception on the radio (has been a problem since new)
- Exterior rear view mirror has lost silver on the rear of the glass where it is attached to the mirror body.
- Car does not have a jack
- Power window operation is slow when engine is not running
- By 1984 the size of the spare tire was too large to allow the cover to close
- Other items that might be expected in a 23 year old auto
