Try a set of Sylvania Silverstar replacement bulbs. The combination of these bulbs (replacement halogen sealed beams / fully DOT legal) and the addition of relays to the headlight circuit made a difference that is not to be believed. Bulbs $20 ea. at Auto Zone, relays and various connectors / sockets under $30 total. End result? Near HID lighting (output / color) with excellent coverage and beam spread without oncoming traffic flashing their brights all the time! BTW, the relays are the key as another member of our chapter bought / installed the Silverstars and was disappointed when comparing them to mine. BIG difference. Absent relays, cleaning all contacts (switches) and connectors helps. I measured 11.1 volts at the bulb connectors before cleaning and 12.2 after (with car running). After relays? 13.8! HUGE DIFFERENCE! A final bonus is that the Silverstars probably won't attract the attention of a judge at most shows and, due to the fact they are sealed beams, do not suffer from internal fogging / dirt issues that often crop up with the capsule type replacement lamp assemblies. I will try to post some pictures of my relay / lamp install in the photos section in a folder marked Silverstar. As for LED conversions, most "headlight replacement" LED bulbs are sold with disclaimers stating "not for primary lighting" or "show use only" due to the difficulty in obtaining sufficient output with LED's in retrofit installs. As is typically the case with most "new" tecnologies, they are appearing at the upper end of the market as the difference in cost to produce a satisfactory result are more easially absorbed there.
