87 Avanti STARTING ISSUES Sep 2011 I am having intermittent starting problems with my 87 Avanti 305. The car will not start on occasion, and has a problem within the ignition setup or safety neutral switch. When the car does not start, it is like it is completely dead after turning the key. There is no noise, no clicking, nothing happens when the key is used. If I wait for a half hour, the car will start up with no problem. It may start up several times in a row, and then not start again. Sometimes it will start just by holding the key in the "start" position for a minute or two. The solenoid and battery cables have been replaced, and the car starts readily when applying 12 volts down to the starter. I checked the voltage coming off the dash ignition line to the starter when the problem is occuring, and it is only getting 7 or 8 volts going to the starter. When the car is starting properly, there is 12 volts going to the starter from this line. Has anyone expierenced this same problem with starting? Ignition switch? Safety Neutral switch? Or possibly the key switch on the column itself? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rich - had the exact same symptoms on my 90 4-door. I'm pretty sure they are the same or very close in wiring, charging and starting components. My problem turned out to be the fusible link that GM uses. They are located down near the starter. If they have never been replaced or removed, I'm pretty sure they are the weak link for you. Good luck and let us know what it is if you eventually find the issue.
