  • Steering: Avanti II power steering box.

What kind of steering gear was used in a 1972 Avanti II? Looking at mine, something like it would make adding electric assisted power steering to my Hawk and/ or Wagonaire much easier.

That should just be a Standard Studebaker Avanti, Ross Manual Steering Gear with the Bendix Power Assist added, nothing "Special" there.

Not New enough to have a Chev. Chassis.

At some point along the way, the supply of Studebaker steering boxes was apparently depleted. The replacement was supposedly sourced from a forklift. I don't know whether the '72 was fitted with a different box, but my '78 is.

Perhaps someone can provide more specific information on this.

If a '72 was built with a Studebaker Avanti steering gearbox it would be either of two types: quick ratio or slow ratio. Power steering equipped Stude Avantis came with the fast ratio box while manual steering cars came with the slow box. The quick box could be ordered on a manual steering car (and some were built this way).

It is a power steering car. I like the fact that is has a rag joint.

Avanti Motors changed to the fork-lift steering box sometime about the '76-'77 model years.
