I've got info on some here in the Owensboro, KY area ... have to make a drive downtown to see about the last one here in O'boro. Here they are: A&M Motor Sales ... 1963?-65? ... 600 E 2nd St, Owensboro, KY (gathering info) Sand Ridge Garage ... 1957?-6? ... 5945 W SR 66, Richland, IN (now home of Ohio Valley Seamless Guttering) Erwin's Services Inc. ... 1962-63 ... 352 W SR 66, Rockport, IN (building now for sale) Sand Ridge Garage had been a Kaiser-Frazer-Hudson dealer earlier in the '50s. The gentleman who owned the dealership, the late Tommy Jessee, took on Studebaker in the late '50s but I can't remember for sure what year. I think it was '57. Erwin's took on Studebaker after a number of years in the auto glass business, which they continued with in the years between 1963 and 1971, which was when they took on Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge for a couple of years. The glass business lasted into the early '90s. As for A&M, I don't know much. I wasn't familiar with them at all until I discovered the dealership's existence in the January 1963 Southern Bell telephone book. I'm gathering info on other local dealers too (Vogel's in Rockport -- early '50s -- and Lloyd's Motor Sales in Evansville, IN, among others). Does anyone think the archives at the SNM might be of help here? Or is this a bad idea all the way around? I just thought it might be nice to do a history of the dealers who sold our favorite rides!!! Clive Sales & Service. Hwy. 12, Clive, Alberta. Sold Studebakers up 'til the end in 1966, but still sold parts and serviced Studebakers up until 1986 when the proprietor, Lawrence Williams passed away. The building is still owned by the family, but is leased out, and is now a roadside cafe. Mechanics Sales & Service, Lethbridge, Alberta. orig. address 307-11 Str. South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Now a fledging Nissan dealership (Lethbridge Nissan), which has been added on to over the years to the original building, and it's main frontage is on 3rd, Avenue. It now has a different avenue address, although part of the original building facing 11th Street still exists if you look hard enough. Harry Forester Limited, 205-17 Ave SW, Calgary, Alberta. Was a Datsun dealer until the mid-seventies, when a motorcycle outfit moved in. The building burnt down around 1978. Ray-Val Sales, 8504-109 Street, Edmonton, Alberta. I believe this may have been Edmonton's last Studebaker dealer in 1966. I returned to Edmonton in 1967, and it was a Renault dealership. Like a lot of Studebaker dealers, it also was a filling station, in this case, Royalite (which later sold out to Gulf). It had a very small one-car 'showroom' with one single sales desk. Sometime around there it was renamed 'A&M Motors' (no relation to Tony Carella's Bronx dealership). The original building was torn down around 1973 or so and became a Macs' convenience store and A&M Motors relocated to 104th Street to bigger premises. They sold Renaults until 1979 or 80 when the AMC dealer down the road got the Renault line as a result of the Regie's 50% buyout (bailout?) of AMC. As an interesting side note, in 1977, I had to pick up some Oh-no parts at A&M Motors, and was driving my 1964 Daytona at the time. One of the saleman there told me that he remembered my car sitting in that single-car showroom for a short time until my former neighbor became its first owner. Mills Motors, Edmonton, Alberta. 10027-109 Street. Frank Mills, retired in 1964. It was also a fairly large Esso service station, and sold fuel until the early seventies when the Self-Serve revoluton came and put the independents out of business. I'm not sure the building still exists, but it was a used car dealership for a time after that. oldcarfart Sign in to reply More message actions 9/9/02 >Subject: Dealer list >From: "Jacob Newkirk" newk...@adelphia.net > > I had a wild idea today ... why don't we try to compile a list of former >Studebaker dealers and the buildings that housed the dealerships -- and what >they're being used for now neat idea, you got time for this??? Again, in Edmonton, while Mills Motors was the most well-known and longest running Studebaker dealer in the city at the time, an import dealer, G.B. Motors which sold Mercedes Benz in the fifties was forced to take on Studebaker for a time when S-P got the North American distribution rights to M-B. I met one former G.B. Motors salesman many years ago who worked there at the time, and admitted they hated having to sell Studebakers as their main line was BMC, Jaguar, and Mercedes-Benz. It would not have surprised me if they did have a Lark or two taking up space to keep S-P happy while they continued as they were with Mercedes Benz. It ain't easy. Thinking once that if a dealer list still existed someplace, it would make my work easier, I contacted Richard Quinn. He did indeed have a list of all the Stude dealers in Calif. as of about '66. To my dismay, the last true Stude dealer in our town (Switzer Motors of Visalia, CA) was not shown. Instead, a local auto parts store was indicated as the "dealer" at the time Stude quit in '66. What conclusion I drew from this was that even if there was/is a list, it may not reflect ALL the dealers that came and went thru the years. What I've done to track down dealers in Visalia is to go to the microfilm library of Visalia newspapers from the town's history (Visalia BTW celebrates it's 150th anniversay this year just like Studebaker!). This has yeilded 4 dealers and 3 locations so far. 2 locations still stand and maybe the 3rd (not sure). I also have an ad from a centennial edition of Visalia's hometown newspaper, The Visalia-Times Delta (1960 edition) wherein the Stude dealer ad proclaims that Studebaker was the ONE product name that had been visible in the newspaper thru it's first 100 years! -- StudeBob Kabchef Studefarming in CA - show quoted text - Jacob Newkirk Sign in to reply More message actions 9/9/02 You're probably right, Bob ... I've been doing some research and Studebaker didn't have nearly the continuity with dealers, at least locally anyway, as have Ford and Chevrolet. Example: I know that one company here in Owensboro handled Studes in the late '40s, but by the early '60s it was A&M as I had mentioned previously. Only two names have been on the Chevrolet franchise here since the dawn of time ... Short Brothers and Don Moore. In fact, "Old Don" (who's retired) kept the Short Brothers name for years. Same for the Ford place. Harry Holder owned it for decades, before he died and his heirs sold the whole thing lock, stock and barrel to former baseball player Bruce Brubaker, who moved out of downtown to the bustling south side to make room for Mazda and Daewoo (ha ha) in addition to Ford, Lincoln & Mercury. But that's getting OT. When I think of it, it would be tough to nail down a list ... maybe I'd have to pick a point to list them -- but when? 1953? 1966? Any suggestions? If everyone on the NG (and there are a lot of us here) could come up with the ones in their area, it would probably be pretty doggone easy. ??? Let me know! In fact, he continued to sell parts into the seventies. There is an AAMCO tranny place there now, I think. Studefam Sign in to reply More message actions 9/12/02 Jacob, Great idea! That is one aspect of Studebaker's history that many people forget. There were a lot of hands that passed over those vehicles before they were sold, many of them at local dealers. The Studebaker dealer here in Georgetown Texas is still living and both buildings that were used are still standing. The Studebaker National Museum at one time had some index card size cabinets that listed all the dealerships for Studebaker. Not sure the range of dates and the thouroughness. Patrick Robert Kabchef Sign in to reply More message actions 9/12/02 I wasn't even LOOKING for this dealer list that Dick Quinn sent me a copy of some years back. Yet it fell into my hands yesterday as I was looking for something else. What RQ sent me was in response to my request for a list of California dealers - assuming such a list had existed at one time. What I got was a copy of this list he has (at least of the pages of it that are relevant to California) of dealers. This is, it's abvious that this list is from post-production days when SASCO was still providing parts. (Not the SASCO of today but the one that was the official outlest for remaining stock of Stude parts after production of vehicles ceased) While it DOES show some of the dealers from when cars were still being built, it also shows parts outlets that were established AFTER dealers in some areas folded up. Places such as All Foreign Auto Salvage in Berkeley or Bruno's Corvette / Avanti Specialists in Studio City or Struble Auto Parts here in Visalia. I think Richard told me he used this list when he systematically went from dealer to dealer in some areas, looking for older parts to buy. I think he also said some dealers were willing to give him a heck of a deal on their whole inventories but he usually passed since he was primarily interested in whatever prewar parts that could be found.
