Inc. 05/16/2005 Cecil Van Tuyl, 78, started in the car business selling used Studebakers. In 1950 he purchased the first of the many dealerships that was to grow into V.T. Inc., a Kansas City, KS-based operation that today consists of many franchises and 34 stores. His son Larry operates an equally expansive operation in the south and southwest. In June, Mr. Van Tuyl celebrates his 50th anniversary in the retail new car business. We spoke with Mr. Van Tuyl recently to learn about his success. Congratulations on 50 years in the car business, Cecil. How did you get your start? I got out of the Navy in 1946 and leveraged the welding skills the Navy had taught me on the assembly line for the Buick-Oldsmobile-Pontiac plant here in Kansas City. Then in late 1950, at 23, I went to work selling used cars for a Studebaker dealer, where I worked until I started my own used car business, United Auto Sales, in February, 1952. In 1955 I put a deal together, using $85,000 I'd made in the used car business and borrowed $60,000 from the bank, to become a Chevrolet dealer. That was all the operating capital that was required in that day. I called this dealership Van Chevrolet.
