  • Rear Sway Bar Help

Does anyone have a couple pictures they can post of a rear swaybar installation in a C/K? I'm trying to install on my '54 Champion, but I'm having a problem figuring how everything goes together. There's a diagram in the manual, but it doesn't really show the relationship and orientation to the frame, driveshaft, springs etc. I suspect I'll end up fabbing a couple brackets and maybe move the muffler, but right now I'm not even sure where to start.

I don't think there are any brackets to fab, if you use universal type sway bar mounts the only thing you'd need would be two plates of steel to back them where they bolt to the "brim" of the frame. The only pieces you need to make this work is the bar itself, the two end links, and all the bushings, bolts, spacers etc. (Dave Thibeault sells all that stuff.) I suspect that your '54 already has the tabs on the spring plates for the end links. Sorry, I don't have any good pics handy but I did this on my '55 coupe a while back and once I got all the hardware together it was pretty straightforward.

      Steve,

Are you looking for info on the stock bar used on Land Cruisers and President sedans or something from a brand X or aftemarket?

I have a bar assy pieced together from '53-'55 Y body sedan stuff in my 53K. It was a bolt-in.

Actually, what I have is the kit from T-Bow, purchased several years ago. When I asked him about instructions, he said just check the illustration in a shop manual. My Champion doesn't have the tabs on the spring plates, but I know about where they should be. For some reason I just can't quite seem to get everything lined up.

Not the best picture but the only one I've got.

            Steve,

Following are five pics of the rear swaybar on my '54 Champion 4-door. This should be very close to what your C-K would look like mounted. Basically I just stuck the camera under the car a few minutes ago, and shot some pics.

EDIT: note that all of these pics were taken from just in front of the rear wheels, looking towards the rear axle.

Look at them, and if there are specific areas that you want more details, let me know. I hope this helps some.

              Steve,
I bought the rear sway kit from t-bo and got the same answer from him, so I asked which shop manual, he said ,there is a blow up picture in the jet thrust section in the 60 to 64 parts catolog(the GREEN pages ), he was right.
Do yopu need a copy? I can take a picture and post it tomorrow.

Thanks guys, that's what I was hoping for. The illustration I was looking at wasn't quite right, and the pictures along with the correct illustration should do the trick. I love this group!

I do have a question. I am planing to mount a rear sway bar to my 1960 Hawk. Since I am in Germany I have to find some other assembly as the original one - which one do you think could fit. Mustang? Camaro? it is quite hard to find anything for Studes in Germany. Any info is appreciated. Thanks Ulli, the Bavarian

I would simply take the easy path, although importing the kit it will have a cost, it will save many hours of experimentation.

                        Yes -
With some creative thinking, a 70's Camaro/Firebird rear (and front) bar can be made to work.
The front bar (1-1/8" or 1-1/4") is a very easy addition and recommended.
The rear bar (several diameters available between the Chevy and Pontiac) will take an addition to the spring pad to hold the bar to it. The spring to spring width is slightly wider on the Stude, so a support will have to be made. As I recall about an inch or so on each side and use the Chevy/Pont. brackets.
The original Camaro/Firebird bar supports to the frame can be used as long as your car isn't too high.

                          Bavarianstude:

Here are a few pictures of a mid-80's Camaro rear bar installation. While I was able to install the bar (on a '64 Daytona) I somewhat question the effectiveness because the links are at an angle rather than vertical. The hardware is from the Camaro and the frame rail needed notching for clearance. I had to bend the brake lines and as can be seen the "U" shape in the center of the bar can be a problem with the trunk floor exhaust and gas tank. That "U" needs to be in just the right spot and that dictates the link length.

Yes, because space under newer cars is so cramped, the Stude style has gone out of favor and most built '60s and later mount the bar to the rear axle and the ends up to the frame. Over the years, I've used both OEM and aftermarket versions of bars designed for Camaro/Firebird and Mustang.

Jack, the picture you posted - where was that bar sourced from?
