With The Saginaw box from a Lark it is about 2 inches shorter than the Ross box in the 53. I think I could live with that if I can modify it so I can use the stock steering wheel. It happens that some '53-54's were made with a Saginaw box. I don't know how widespread this was...maybe all Champions? Anyway, it looks like a bolt in replacement for the Ross. The pitman arm on the Saginaw is different than the Ross, but should fasten to the same drag link. The jacket is the same. Gord was kind enough to locate a '53 Saginaw for me. I've shortened the shaft and the jacket about 2" on my Ross to get the steering wheel out of my face and will have to do the same with the Saginaw shaft. I'm hoping my '54 will steer as good as my '62 Lark did with the Saginaw. I think that the late Saginaw boxes have fewer turns lock to lock. Ross and early Saginaw 6 &1/4 turns and the late Lark Saginaw 4 & 1/2 turns. the problem with them is the shaft is too small to accept the 53 steering wheel. What I will try to do is put a rag joint in and use the old shaft from the rag joint to the steering wheel.I think that would solve several problems. ---------------------------------------------- 53-55 Saginaw into an originally Ross equipped car ------------- I take it that you mean it does NOT bolt up to the frame... That's because it WON'T... Studebaker used an adapter bracket that bolted to the frame, and the Power Steering box bolts to that. What you need is that bracket. 1955-58 Chassis Parts Manual: Page 417 plate # 13-5 Group 1301-7 Part # 534301 Application- C/K all 1953-1959 Ray --------------------------- """ They may be "interchangeable" (dunno, never tried it) but they are not swappable... if'n you don't believe me just try to put a '57 steering wheel on a '56... nate -------------- No, no...
