Oct 2004 /////////// I fitted a later model Studebaker self adjusting system from a 1964 Stude, new shoes, master & wheel cylinders plus hoses. All brakes work good except the Left hand rear keeps locking up for some reason. When the car is cold no problem , the wheel turns okay but after a few miles the L/H rear wheel slowly locks up. If I jack the car up the wheel will easly turn back but locks when turned forward. When the car sits for a while and cools down the wheel will turn forward okay. It seems the brake is coming on by itself.I also have fitted a worn brake drum to this wheel as I thought clearence may be the cause but the same thing happens.I have a shop manual and everything is per the book, I have done many Stude brakes but not struck this before. could it be something to do with the self adjuster on this wheel. your ideas please. thank from Roger. ////////// --------------- Sounds like the parking brake cable is too tight. ---------------- My 55 was doing exactly the same thing last week- and it was a sticking emergency brake actuator arm It wasn't totally on- so the wheel would roll cold- but after a mile of drving the brake shoe would expand from heat and almost lock up Brake elights come on and stay on even after its shut down? Mine did- from the fluid boiling and expanding ---------------- One of the common causes of this is the rubber hoses at the wheels. Did you replace them? ---------------- mergency brake is not properly adjusted at that side; dragging just enough to get hot over a period of time. Is the sheathing over that side's emergency brake cable allowing the cable to fully release; i.e, not slightly seized inside and then dragging when not fully releasing? 2. Odd but possible: the rear wheel bearing axle shaft end play is too loose. With too much end play, the drum might not be staying centered around the brake assembly when the car is underway and under load. This could cause brake drag, but only under load, that would cause it to heat up. Cools down and then you jack it up, relieving the load, so it turns fine cold, off the ground...or for a few miles ON the ground before getting hot. ---------------- The brake adjuster on one of the rear wheels on my 56 Transtar would lock up everytime I backed up.Turned out the whole adjuster was seized and turned where it wasn't supposed to(hope that makes sense).Jacked it up,freed up adjuster, tighned it so it couldn't move anymore, end of problem. ---------------- Take the drum off and look at the centering piece on the top pivot. There is a small arrow on it. Make sure it is pointed toward the front. Its the piece both of the shoes contact at the top. It was called the anchor block and is part no. 535146. It was present in the early 1950's brakes on, I am uncertain when they started using this part. ---------------- ////advice on my locking brake problem that it seems to be solved, I removed drum and took off brake adjuster, went for a drive ,then jacked wheel up, wheel was locked again, then I noticed brake lights were on so I backed of the master cylinder rod, there was a slight noise and the brakes released and the wheel turned freely so it seems it was the brake adjuster coming on by itself and a case of the M/C rod not being adjusted properly,
