Idle speed - Standard vs R series the factory setting in the shop manual is indeed 650 rpm in drive, and that will work on a "normal" 259/289 engine, but an R1/R2 and especially an R3 engine with automatic transmission, especially, will not idle smoothly at 650 rpm in drive. The cam shafts used in the R-series engines have more overlap than the standard V8 camshafts, and because of this, will need the rpm set a little higher. Try about 850-900 rpm in drive. For those with a standard transmission/ 4-speed, these engines can probably tolerate a lower rpm idle, since when your at a standstill, the clutch is depressed and/or the engine is in neutral. No drag exists on the engine from the transmission and torque converter. I have had a couple of friends with R1 engines and automatics in their Larks too, and they experienced the same symptoms. All these engines had proper operating carbs, distributors and the valve settings were correct, and no vacuum leaks. At 850-900 rpm in drive, an R1 automatic should idle almost normal.... Just remember these cams have more of an overlap than a standard cam. lschuc@mac.com Lew Schucart August 2001
