Twin traction rear - Dana 45 type rear ( 45B on tag ) Quick check for aa posi-traction rear is to remove the pipe plug and try and stick your finger in to check the fluid. With a PT rear, you can't get your finger in because the TT unit housing is blocking the hole. ----------------------------------------------- Traction block I made up a special tool for reinserting them when they drop out. Really just a length of PVC pipe that's been opened up to the OD size of the thrust block at one end - and then a wooden dowel that's a bit longer than the pipe to push the block out of the pipe once you've guided it into it's seat. Works good. I had three TT rears apart one time and was getting frustrated when the blocks kept dropping out while I was working with the axles. -------------------------------------------------------- I pulled and replaced the left axle shaft on my 62 GT Hawk yesterday. The rear end is a model 44 twin-traction. Once the backing plate was removed I used a 5lb weight from my son's barbell set ( instead of a slide hammer) to pull the axle and bearing by sliding the weight onto the axle and than putting the axle nut and washer back on the end of the shaft. Hitting the weight against the axle nut and washer a few times and the axle and bearing came out surprisingly easy. I had spoken with Nate at Reedsville about removing the axle and he advised that on the TT there is thrust washer (illustration item 1002-11 on page 304 of the 59-64 Chassis Parts Catalog) that will likely come out with the axle and be found lying in the bottom of the axle tube. He was correct. He also advised to put it back you should use a piece of metal brake line about 30 inches long through which you run a stiff wire. The thurst washer has a small hole through the center and you can thread the end of the stiff wire into the thrust washer, kink it just enough to hold the thrust washer and then use the brake tube to push the thrust washer back into place. Hold it there with the tube and pull the wire to release the thrust washer. It worked like a charm. Many thanks to Nate for this advice as I would have never even thought to look for the thrust washer to start with, this seems to be an item overlooked in the Service Manual, and who knows what would have happend if I had put it back together with out it there. I pass this along so that someone else can benefit from this information. ----------------------------- I can tell you what would happen, you would smack the axle shaft to "set" it in preparation for setting the endplay and it would move back and forth about 3/16" - guess how I know :) BTW I'm not sure who came up with the brake tube and mechanic's wire idea, but it's been working for me. - --------------
