The use of Chrysler weights in the Prestolite distributors did not originate with me; I first spotted the suggestion in an Avanti Owners Assoc. newsletter many years ago. Over the years though I have probably installed at least a couple dozen sets in my service work for various customers. The Chrysler weights weigh a tad more than the original Stude weights, perhaps a couple grams; call it ~57 grams for the Chrysler weights versus ~55 grams for the Stude. The Chrysler weights are either a cast, or perhaps pressed powder, weight with an oilite bushing at the weight pivot point. The original Stude version is a laminated metal version with no bushing, just a hole, for the pivot shaft. The original Chrysler weight package (orange in color AFAIR) contained two weights already assembled. The later package, blue in color, had pieces to be assembled. You have to press the cam pivot shafts into the weights, as well as the spring attachments. Also you have to stake the spring attachments in the weight. The weight package is Chrysler #1881955. As somebody has noted, the weight itself is stamped 1838607. Whether this is an actual part number, or perhaps an engineering or casting number I do not know, I rather suspect the latter. I don't recall what the original Chrysler application was, although I it may have been mentioned in the original article in the Avanti newsletter. Since retiring I have had no occasion to order these anymore from Chrysler so I have no idea as to their current availability. I do know that the last time I got some they had to be a special order through some guy in Chrysler's Detroit parts plant since there were no longer 'in the book'. I think at that time they must have had somebody who handled requests for obsoleted parts. SASCO still shows the original Stude weight as still available; however before installing these I would take them down to a machine shop and have them drill out the pivot hole and install a thin wall oilite bushing. The Chrysler weight is somewhat fatter to accommodate the bushing. randee@zianet ====================================== The Chrysler #1881955 for the distributor weights is a package of two; Prestolite # 31-279. Where can I get Prestolite parts? By the way, Mr. Gasket Advance Curve Kit #925 B is two springs like R2. Summitt has those.
