Avantis to the contrary, South Bend steel bodies begin with body #101. For example, the body tag on George Krem's Plain Brown Wrapper is 64V F2 with 343 under that model designation: Body #343 (easy to remember for a part-time AMC fan). That means it was the 243rd 1964 Challenger V-8 2-door body built. (Incidentally, they built 274, 1964 Challenger V-8 2-doors, so his was pretty close to the end.) South Bend bodies were sequentially numbered BY MODEL, so body #343 indicates it is the 243rd 64V-F2 built. Hamilton bodies, by contrast, were sequentially numbered by TOTAL BODY COUNT, regardless of style. Hence, David's body number, here, of 6347 means it was the 6247th 1966 body built at Hamilton. Body #6346 could have been a Wagonaire and #6348 could have been a Cruiser...or another Daytona Sport Sedan, for all we know. Of course, if it turns out Hamilton bodies started at 1001, all the above Hamilton numbers would have to be adjusted accordingly. But South Bend bodies started at 101, by model type. BP ========= >VIN is C 533426 > >On the firwall there are two little tags. > >V-F8 >6347 A '66 Daytona Sport Sedan (2 door) - base price $2500., wb 109, base weight 3006, length 190 inches. There were only 2321 two doors built (Commander & Daytona Sport Sedan). You didn't state, but your serial number is for a V8 - 283, 195 HP. The V8 models for 1966 started with S/N C530001. There were 8947 total '66's built. Assuming approximately an even split between six's and V8's, your car is late in production. I can't understand the "6347" body number since only 2321 two doors were built for 1966 (both series and all engines). I missed out in buying the last new '66 Daytona Sport Sedan in this area by a few hours. I would still like to own a nice one some day. Maybe someone has a shop/body manual available that gives the starting body number. Maybe it started with 6001 (unusual, but possible}. Are you sure of the "6347" number? The "V-F8" I guess is only V8 Daytona Sport Sedans, so maybe you have the 347th built. Gary L. Studebaker Drivers Club Director - Northeast Zone 36 year member of Studebaker Drivers Club, Inc. ======
