Aug 2004 - Ring gear wear - After looking at lots of used ring gears, I have found V-8s generally stop in one of four places. Sixes generally stop in one of three places. A used gear will show this distinct wear pattern. IF the gear is not worn too badly, all six convertor bolts can be removed and the convertor turned 1/6th of a revolution. Put the bolts back in and tighten. This technique goes a long way to nurse a worn gear, especially on a 6 cylinder car. This trick works with Studebaker powered cars, with automatics as well. KK
