I bought this car thinking I was going to restore it, but I've decided to sell all of my projects and buy a car that is done. This car was bought originally by a doctor in New Orleans. The gentleman I bought it from purchased it in 1990. He said he bought it from a classic car broker in Indiana who bought it from the estate of the original owner in New Orleans. He drove it until 1995 where he parked it in his driveway until I bought it. He said he had it covered most of the time but the cover eventually blew off (he had a stroke and couldn't attend to the car any longer). He also said he never drove it in the winter, it stayed parked in the driveway. It is Avanti Gold with the Elk interior with the Regal seat option. It is the R1, 240HP non-supercharged version of the Studebaker 289. Factory 10.25:1 compression, 4bbl, and dual exhaust. The car needs total restoration, but is complete. Because it sat outside, water got inside and ate up the carpeting and the trunk carpeting and caused the interior to get some mold which I started cleaning. The rear shelf panel needs replacing, water ruined it and it fell into the trunk. I oiled the cylinders and then put my truck battery in it and it turned over easily. I didn't try to start it because I'm sure the gas is bad. I would think that it would start from a gas can which I plan to do if I have time. I removed the stainless spark plug covers to oil the cylinders, but will put them back on before the sale. I will update this posting if I get it started. The trunk release cable was rusted so I had to break into the trunk which means the bolts holding the u-shaped latch need to be drilled out, they broke off. I did find the original spare and tire iron in there, but the jack is missing. The "hog troughs" are perfect and there is no other rust on the frame from what I can see, but I didn't put it up on a hoist and I'm not an Avanti expert though I wouldn't have bought it if I thought there was a problem with the frame. The ignition switch bezel is missing. This car is the 824th Avanti made by Studebaker. These cars are featured in the August 2009 Hemmings Classic Car magazine and are becomming noticed by collectors. This car should be restored by an Avanti lover which I've decided, I am not. The engine is NOT SEIZED, it turns over. Options: 289 V8 Automatic (B&W T-3) Air conditionaing Tinted glass P. Steering P. Disc brakes AM Radio with rear speaker Seat Belts Regal pattern seating Map light I don't know any more history than what I've said above. I have the original owner's manual and the temp tag from the Indiana broker dated in 1990, no other paperwork. I cannot verify if that is 55k or 155k miles. The radio did not work when I put the battery in, but the wipers, lights, air conditioning blower, etc. did work. Tires are old and it also will need brakes. I recommend that you come and inspect the car in person, it's located in metro Detroit area. Email or Call with any questions: 248-417-8041. You will not find a more original car. I bought this car to restore and I really hate to sell, but I don't have time, space, and money.
