This is a 1963 Studebaker Avanti. 289 cu. in. R1 engine, Auto trans., cold A/C. I bough this car last Fall. I had never owned an Avanti and wanted to try one. My friend and Studebaker specialist JDP (eBay name goldenhawk) had bought this one from a family that had done a ton of work on it, and either the owner passed away, or fell on hard times. It was a running and driving car at a steal price that had already had the hard stuff done, so I grabbed it. The previous owner had done a mountain of work on the car already; I have receipts totaling $20,230.70. Some of the work done: *Rebuild brake system (Over $2K in parts alone) *Rebuild suspension- all king pins and bushings, 4 shocks, alignment, etc. *Install new electric fuel pump *Service cooling system *Replace rear crossmember *Replace all weatherstrips and seals- including R&R front and rear windshields (over $1500 in parts) *R&R side windows and refurbish mechanisms And much, much more. Included is a 6-page bill from the restoration shop. MECHANICAL- The car starts and runs well. I drove it to town a few times before Winter came; really goes with plenty of power. Power steering works well but does have a slight bit of play, nothing major. Brakes work well (at that price they should!). No smoking or overheating. JDP installed the correct alternator and regulator, and cleaned up a little wiring under the hood. Exhaust is tight and quiet. Lights all seem to work inside and out.. A/C works and blows cold. INTERIOR- When JDP got it he started cleaning the car up; the interior was toast. He installed a complete used interior. Everything has been replaced- seats, carpet, door panels, headliner, factory roll bar cover. The dash was cracked and gauges were spotty, so he replaced the dash and pads. While it was out he replaced the wiring harness, gauges and lighting as needed and reinstalled, including a working period- correct AM/FM radio. Car has nice hardware and console, and is ready for use, although the temp. gauge appears to be not working just now. BODY- Straight and original. Fiberglas is in good shape except for two small cracks- one at the RF edge, one over the LR wheel. Neither are structural or have any pieces out, just simple cracks. The weak part of this car is the paint. It's mostly intact but is faded and thin, and chipped here and there. I don't believe it's the original color, but that can be determined by ordering the original Production Order available at the Studebaker National Museum. It still presents reasonably well, but with all that's been done it deserves new paint. WHEELS-The wheels are American brand aftermarket, with four brand new tires. I like them on the car, but if you do not the factory stock hubcaps come with the car. FRAME AND UNDERSIDE- Those that know Avantis know the frame and side body supports are critical. The side supports run under the doors and are referred to as 'hog troughs'. On this car the hog troughs look very clean and solid- not only damage-free but rust-free. The rest of the frame as well; there is a tube cross brace at the rear that tends to rust, and that was replaced as part of the above-mentioned restoration work. Currently my budget will not allow me to have any keepers; but I can hold them temporarily. My intention with this car was to drive it till snow flew, then over the winter repaint it, then resell. That plan changed for two reasons- time seemed to slip by was one; but the other was, being that I wasn't able to keep it, I didn't want to risk painting it a color that would deter someone for whom this was otherwise the right car. So, I am offering it as it sits. You can get in this car and drive it now, today. You could drive and enjoy it this spring and summer while you decide on the color you want, then do the repaint over the winter. Other than paint it will need very little- the weatherstrips have already been bought and replaced, the brakes and tires are all new throughout, the exhaust is tight, and she runs really good. I'd tighten up the steering, adjust the valves, look it over, and enjoy. Everyone seems to have a Chevelle, or a Camaro, or a Mustang, Charger, or some other common muscle car. I love 'em all, but they're everywhere, and cost a whole lot more than an Avanti. This is your chance to buy a sports car that has the power and handling to compete with the Big 3 offerings at a fraction of the price. Literally everything and anything you might want or need for this car is easily available; the Studebaker world has top-notch vendors that can get you anything you would need, and are great folks besides; and the SDC (Studebaker Driver's Club) is one of the best enthusiast clubs in the world, complete with top-notch and active Forums. JDP bought the car dirt-cheap and passed it on to me dirt-cheap. Therefore I can sell it dirt-cheap: less than half the money spent on repairs, and you get the car for free! Feel free to ask any questions. I can arrange shipping for you anywhere with our well-known and proven shipper. I MIGHT be talked into bringing it to the Spring Carlisle (PA) at the end of this month for expenses; let's talk. Good luck, and Happy Bidding!
