1963 R-2782

1963 Studebaker Avanti R2 Supercharged #R2782 I purchased this rare, collector car in Virginia in 1991 and began a long and interesting project to restore it to its original beauty. First we reworked the;

Mechanicals: new shocks, suspension components, front springs, fuel line, brake lines, mufflers, new water pump, new high pressure fuel pump, new distributor and new carb., new voltage regulator, radiator cleaned and sealed and other minor stuff. Engine: About 1,000 miles on a complete engine rebuild in 2001. 289 CI Studebaker block bored out to about 295 CI, new pistons/rings and rods, new cam, new crank, new valves/springs, new oil pump. A new engine-very, very strong. Automatic three speed transmission completely cleaned and adjusted.

Exterior: Paint Removed all exterior hardware and glass and professionally painted by Hall’s Paint. Seven coats of long block sanded Prime, four coats Avanti Red and three coats of Clear. The Red has a very fine gold metal flake that lights up in the sun (tastefully). New front and rear bumpers and guards. Outside chrome and badges are 50/50 new or original (all excellent). All new rubber gaskets: windshield, backlite, doors and windows. Sand blasted and painted original wheels. New white wall tires close to original appearance. Original hub caps.

Interior: Interior is Black and Cream, trim panels are original Black and new Cream. Rear seats are excellent shape original Black and front seats are new Black. Headliner is new, modern insulated, cloth covered foam. Carpets are new. Modern AM/FM radio with retracting antenna. (Original AM radio comes with) Interior chrome is original but is in very good condition. All instruments and lights work.

Negatives: Nothings perfect. Small crack in dash cover. Horn switch is broken. Left door lock handle is missing. Left electric window is slow.

This is a great car, a real head turner and unknown to most, a real muscle car. This car won First Place Studebaker in the 2002 Muscle Car Nationals. It is very fast, corners well (for a 1963 car) and stops on a dime (front disk brakes). This is not a “show car”, nor a “100 point” or a “#1” car. It is a well restored and maintained fun car. NADA Guides quotes a “High Retail” 1963 Avanti R2 at $32,400.
