Rare and sought after best describe the late production 1964 Avantis, as they were the recipients of multiple updates and engineering changes as Studebaker continued to improve upon the earlier models. The later the vin#, the more factory updates were engineered into the car. These changes ranged from quite minor cosmetics to very signifigant quality control and mechanical changes. Not to mention the factory options like AM/FM and Tilt wheel that were only available on the later models. This Avanti was one of the last cars built and has EVERY factory improvement ever put into production, making this a very desirable car with collectors. This 1964 Avanti is painted Avanti grey with an extremely rare Clarette interior that was only offered near the end of production. The interior is in amazing condition and all original. Some of the interior pictures look red from the flash but the ones with a burgundy/wine color are very close to the actual interior. The museum quality seats and dash are original and impeccable (look at them closely). You will rarely see an unmolested interior survive like this. The seat foam and vinyl are soft and supple. With exception of the clock, the guages all seem to work including the tachometer. The carpet is worn and could use a replacement down the road. The woodgrain on the dash and console is in near perfect condition. All the stainless trim on the door panels, console, etc. , is free of dings or blemishes. Guages are bright and have great chrome. All the chrome in the interior is really great as well. The interior is truly indicative of a 69,000 mile car. It also has a real Studebaker TILT WHEEL, yes the ultra elusive tilt wheel resides in this car. The car came very highly optioned with power windows, tinted glass all around, AM/FM radio (not included) Air Conditioning and more. This one of the most RUST FREE Avantis I have ever seen anywhere. Other than a little surface oxidation from sitting around, the frame is perfect. The frame rails look like chalkboards with no orange peel or dimpling...just smooth steel. Hogtroughs are rock solid and original. This car is AMAZINGLY solid and uncompromised structurally. Engine is an R-1 with air conditioning. A/C compressor is almost new and still blows cool air although it does need a recharge but is in great shape. In fact , all the A/C components including the condensor, look like new. Transmission shifts fine under hard acceleration and the engine feels very strong. The water pump was just replaced. The valve covers are a tad rusty and the engine compartment could use some cleaning, but the engine runs great and the mechanicals are all working properly to the best of my knowledge. This Avanti has also been modified for safety with a DUAL MASTER CYLINDER and modern Turner disc brake conversion and braided steel brake hoses (at a high expense) to ensure increased stopping reliability. The suspension is very tight and the ride is extremely smooth and void of squeeks, creaks or noises. The steering also feels very tight and solid. This car really feels smooth going down the road, much tighter and quieter (except for the throaty glass pack mufflers) than many cars of this age . The Paint looks great from 10 feet but has some imperfections up close. Great for a driver or cruise night but a car this rare and well maintained deserves show quality paint, although the car does still look fantastic Stainless trim is gorgeous except for a 3/8 inch hole from a spot light on the drivers post. Front bumper has been rechromed , back bumper is so-so. Headlight rims are like new as are the taillight and parking . Door handles are also in beautiful shape. Overall, the car is in very nice shape but not perfect. It is not a restored car, but more of a survivor, which would not need that much to be a show winner. Coupled with the fact that it is a very late production Avanti, 99% rust free and has TILT WHEEL makes for a very desirable combo. I originally bought this car because it had Tilt Wheel, AM/FM radio and HALIBRAND wheels that I need for my factory R3 Avanti. I have struggled with the idea of removing all of them and have decided to sell the Avanti including the Tilt wheel. I have waited twenty years to find one I could afford and the last one sold on ebay for almost $2000.00 , so letting the Tilt wheel go is killing me. I decided it was too much of a change for the factory R3 car though, and will let it go with car and live to regret it later. I will ,however, be keeping the HALIBRAND wheels and AM/FM radio. The avanti will be sold either old school american racing wheels or factory avanti wheels and hubcaps. Im sorry the pics do not reflect the new wheels but I havent decided what wheel set to put on it yet. Just to avoid any possible misunderstandings, I reiterate that the auction does not include the Halibrand wheels or the AM/FM radio. Again, I only bought the car for these 2 items in the first place. Thats not such a bad thing though, as it means a very rare car is once again available. 2 years ago (before my R3 car) I would never let this one go. I have some other Avanti powered cars that I will also need to sell , so if any one is looking for a supercharged lark, hawk or avanti email me. Remember when considering the value of this car its one of the last built, 99% rust free, original interior, great color combo and the tilt alone is worth $2000.00 if you can find one.
