Isn't that the next-to-last Studebaker Avanti completed (not counting prototypes re-serialed later)?

Yep - one right before the last...this one was an R3 (supposed to be one of the nine) and Halibrands. Definitely was a nice car - only wish he would have stayed for Saturday - guy from the Keystone Chap wanted to take pictures of it next to his Dad's '64 (R5636).

I took pics of R5642 in the parking lot, but he drove off almost before I could get my head out from under the hood.

    There are a couple here

That's definitely R5642, the 2nd last factory R3 Avanti - black blower and Paxton hose that I acquired as replacement. Sorry I wasn't able to attend the meet. I have some of the original parts for that car. The owner should get in touch with me. There have been many references to R5642 in previous posts. Pictures of that engine have been posted under "R3 Engine Pictures".

The car is owned by Dave Kinny from Washington DC. Dave also owns 1002. He was there at John Hull's request to participate in John's well attended seminar, "A Walk Down Memory Lane." This event ran for about three hours and the room was full. Dave is a very busy person who publishes the quarterly Antique/Classic Car price guide "Cars That Matter." He only came up for the day (Friday) as he had to be in California on Saturday to meet with some individuals concerning adding additional vehicles to his price guide. By the way his guide available through hagerty Insurance. I have all editions of the book and use it regularly in appraising vehivles for others.

Very interesting. I was in Dave Kinney's garage several years ago and he showed me several of his Avantis (and he has a bunch), but he either didn't have 5642 then or he had it in one of his other locations. When I sold my 5420 several years ago, my buyer from Sausalito, CA had me deliver it to Dave at his Great Falls, VA home. It seems that Dave had appraised his 50+ car collection of big dollar cars (the '64 R-2 Avanti was the lowest value car he had) and they had developed a friendship. In addition to his publications Dave travels all over appraising cars or collections for $$$ owners.
I noticed in the 2003 AOAI roster that 5642 belonged to a man named Dick Marty in Ontario. I seem to remember that car being for sale a few years ago so Dave must have bought it. My 2009 Roster doesn't list the car at all though Dave Kinney is listed in Virginia.

I made a mistake and wrote before I verified the facts. Dave owns at least 5 Avantis and does have one of the last cars beinng one of the 5 that were renumbered and sold from the engineering department. He drove his own personal car to Gettysburg as he had to catch a flight to Ft Lauderdale to attend an auction.

As for the car at Gettysburg this car was sold at auction in Texas, I believe a year or so ago for a record amount. It was owned by a large collector who was putting a museum together and is the car from Canada. RM Auction sold the car.

My apologies for writing before thinking.

I think the car was in the O'Quinn collection and was sold at an auction in Florida. Was the car purchased by Danny Jones at this auction? The car went from Krem to Marty to O'Quinn as far as I know.

All that I remember about the car at Gettysburg is people trying to buy the wheels off it.

Dave Kinney wasn't sitting behind it in the parking lot nor did he drive it off... He must have had an accomplice...............
