I know it happens all the time, and I expect it for lowly Larks, but this was a pretty special car:

I have seen several Studebaker Avantis in junkyards and fields in worse shape than that one.
It is sad.

What's special about an '82 Avanti?

That is a good question Matthew.
But think about this..
All Studebakers are numbered, where survival goes.
There are no more to replace those that are lost forever due to rust/parting out/accidents, etc.
Not a big deal when there are 2 million left (BTHOOM#)..
But, as we age, and see the number dwindle...
Each one means more to those that are left.
Right now that is how I feel about Stude owners.
So many that I have had the privilege to have met or have known...
The clock is running, and no one can stop it...
So that 'lowly' Avanti II means more as examples dwindle.
That's why a craba$$ complaining about today's price to do this or do that seems out of touch.
The CASO tag only goes so far and only works where there is sincerity.
There will come a day when any Stude is looked at with the reverence of a Duesenberg...
But not in our lifetime...
But in the meantime... The Lark guy will look up to the Avanti..
And the Avanti guy will look down on all other Studebakers
Pot stirrer to the stars...
Jeff

??? Really??

V8, Auto, loaded fiberglas sports car, even luggage rack and power moon roof. Looks as though it was complete, running and driven where it was parked. Any time I've seen one of these in decent shape they command good money, more than any comparable '80s sports car. And didn't you notice it's an Avanti, as in Studebaker????

Sadly, we know all to well what that will look like underneath

My grandparents have an '81, and I think they bought it when I was 5. It had more options that this one, though most we have removed.

Luggage rack has been removed as it looks gaudy.

Dayton wire wheels have been replaced with steel wheels and Avanti wheel covers. The internal peeling chrome on the Daytons was costing too many tubes.

You think the sun roof is a good thing to have? Just ask ANYone who has driven an Avanti with a sun roof in the rain... (We have a system now. After the paper towels around the roof are saturated, we turn the AC on high and lay the towels across the vents. Put new towels in the roof. By the time they're saturated, the first ones are dry now.)

I've been told that the sun roof assembly was original designed for some model Lincoln. That makes since, as they don't fit in an Avanti.

Not only that, the low compression 305 powering that car is a real slug. That flathead 6 Corvette would be more fun to drive.

It's not as fun as it sounds.

Notice the old ratty Lark on the right, Bob. Just for you.

Intriguing snippet from the seller's description: "This car is very standard. I am told that this is a very rare car as it was hand-built."

Can ya have it both ways???

You see it that way based on your own experience; but my above explanation is how most of the market would see that car in decent shape. And the prices I've seen prove that. Most won't know about the negatives you mention until they actually experience them themselves. People buy cars based on emotions all the time.

As for the moonroof- yes, I'd think it was a good thing. It's one of my favorite options on any car. Of course, it's based on modern cars that are leak- and trouble-free. So I wouldn't know these specific ones were problems.

See what I'm saying?

NOOOOOO, not me I'm not a big Avanti lover in any condition... especially one that might pull into pieces when you try to move it

I never thought much about the Avanti II's one way or another until I saw one out my motel window one year at Tri-State.

About the same vintage as this sad car, with sunroof, luggage rack, and a light brown leather interior that was starting to get that crinkly look that leather gets when it's really broken in nicely.

That car was just gorgeous. I seem to recall it was sold that weekend, and ever since the guy who sold it has been trying to buy it back.

Matthew, maybe you just have a dog yourself, don't judge them all that way, in my books An Avanti II is every much an Avanti as a 63 or 64, when is the last time you have seen a lark or hawk frame sell for $2000.00?, just go down the line and parts from it will out $$ either of the others if it comes to that anyone that likes Studebakers should still defend all the Avantis, I think we need to respect all built during those times . I know I could sit here and bad mouth a lot of the cars build under the name of Studebaker but have come to respect even the ones I never liked, how far back did the guy stand when he through the head lights at the 58's??.. I still respect the name....Bob

It's an Avanti II - which never would have existed without Studebaker...every bit of deserving the respect of any Studebaker nut!

But for me, I prefer the 63-64s, because they were the first and I know a heck of a lot more about Studebaker V-8s than SBCs...

That's the great thing about this club, we can (or should) respect them all but collect what we like personally. Russ Farris
