Here is your chance to own a classic! This 1963 Avanti was purchased
new in 1963, sold to the second owner in 1967, and was purchased by us
in 2012. We have had the car repainted, but all of the rest of the car
in in original condition. The car is a matching numbers 289, V8, with
auto trans. with 56.983 miles. The top of the line Studebaker 289 made
only 225 Horsepower. It was tuned up to deliver 240 horsepower.
Studebaker had just acquired Paxton, and with it came an a belt-driven
centrifugal supercharger good for 300 horsepower. Paxton President was
Andy Granatelli, added a few ideas of his on how to promote the Avanti's
performance image. The design and technology was way ahead of its time
for this car. All chrome in good shape, interior has minimal wear for
being original. "The car's design theme is the result of sketches
Sherwood Egbert "doodled" on a jet-plane flight west from Chicago 37
days after becoming president of Studebaker in February, 1961. the
Avanti featured a radical fiberglass body design mounted on a modified
Studebaker Lark Daytona 109-inch convertible chassis with a modified 289
Hawk engine. The car was fitted with front disc-brakes which were
British Dunlop designed units, made under license by Bendix, "the first
American production model to offer them." Fewer than 4600 were produced
in 1963, as the vin number shows this car to be in the early production ,
with the vin number showing in the 1200 range.
