Removing the 63-64 Studebaker Avanti starter motor.. Over the years any Avanti that's still on the road is bound to have had the exhaust replaced. The original pipes had a bow in the downpipe that allowed the starter to be unbolted and removed easily. Shops that have replaced your pipes over the years have had many avenues for parts and may have used the originals from the factory, or ordered a set of Walker pipes, even NAPA listed them. In some cases the pipes had to be custom bent and there's where the sausage started getting made. It's easier to leave out the bend when the pipe is made and it doesn't make a lot of difference to an exhaust person, as they will go on fine and his job is done. When it comes time to service the starter though, the story changes, as without the bend, the starter removal gets a bit ore difficult. The only remedy in this case is to drop the pipe from the bottom of the exhaust manifold, so there's room to remove the starter rearwards... Be sure to flood the threaded parts with a lot of PB blaster for a day or two before trying this.
