Dec 2005 ---------------- //////can't get it (starter) out of the "cage" formed by the engine, frame, exhaust and front suspension. Can't drop the exhaust because the pipe runs through the X-member, and is touching the bottom of the opening, can't drop. I'm beginning to think the only solution is to cut away a 6"X6" piece of the bottom of the inner fender, and bring it out over the frame.///////// ------ You are right about the exhaust being in the way. If you can't drop the header which I have done on mine, you then can cut the inner finder to bring it out. Doug Greene --------- Hi Chuck, The starter will come out and go back in easily, you have to jack up the front cross-member, when you do the right A frame (with the tire on, you need the weight..) and steering tyrod will come down just enough when you turn the wheels to a sharp left to give you some wiggle room, you push the starter forward and twist it, it will kind of make a 90 degree turn down and drop right into your hands... Natch, putting the new one is the reverse of the above... When I replaced mine, I questioned my clearance between the ring gear and the starter gear.. thought it was too close. Been about year and half now and it still starts ok and hasn't tossed any parts at me..! Good luck playing Mr GoodWrench.. Merle 84 TC, RQB3884 -------------- After having many of the same problems as you are having, I chose to install a gear driven starter that is much lighter and smaller, and also much more $$. but it does goes in and out nice.
