In addition to the lining difference, the 53 tang is 27/64" while the correct 173 has a tang that is 23/64". Many times, altho not all, the shoe is stamped FMS173. The reason for the smaller tang on the correct 173 was undoubtedly because of the small 3/4" wheel cylinder specified by Bendix. To date I have not seen a brake book that lists the 53 as a sub for the 173; but with a little bit of work on the grinder you could turn a 53 into a 173. The drum is full size Plymouth (Fury) item used from '67-'72. Now since the axle and drum were basically Chrysler style, I would assume the backing plates are too. Of course that same Spicer 44 was used on just about every light truck from Chevy to Willys. So they could very well be Chevy. The numbers stamped on the plates are 324121-R or L. From the outfit that manufactured the plates? I found a note in my parts book. It says Avanti II 182/334. I could not find the 182 in either my Wagner or Raybestos book. But the NAPA book says 'use 228'. The NAPA book says (the 228) application is '59-'63 Chevy 1/2 ton truck and '63-'65 'Vette. It appears that the only difference between the two numbers may be that the 334 has an extra hole for use when self adjusters are fitted. The 373 kit is correct for cylinders 36076/7. I show these as 13/16" cylinders for '61-'70 Ford truck and '67-'68 Mustang randee January 2002
