    Clutch Fan& Blades

Here is another tech question! I have a 62 Hawk with 289CID engine. When I bought it it had a six bladed fan ( on the water pump ) This is so loud I can not even hear the engine. Has anyone ever installed a clutch fan from another car?

It sure cools the engine. Today I removed the fan and drove for 50 or so miles. No problem except when I cam back home and set at a light it started to get a little warm. ( 195)

The pilot on the water pump is approx. one (1) inch. The local parts stores had lots of clutches but none with this size bore.

    Any ideas?

Contact Meyers Studebaker in Ohio, ask for a HD pump, vicous drive and fan from a later Stude, tell them what you have.

I am using the viscous drive and 7 bladed fan off of a 69 Olds 442. Much, much quieter. If you can get just the 7 bladed fan, it bolts up to the Stude viscous drive. The Olds clutch has a thicker shoulder that bolts against the water pump pully. That 6 bladed fan will keep you from hitting any deer, it will scare them and any evil spirits away.

I have a seven-blade fan with the replacement non-thermal viscous clutch. It is extremely noisy. I just bought a stock five-blade fan from Jon and I have a NOS Studebaker viscous unit. They are both going on the car SOON.

If you search here on the forum, you will find several threads on this topic. There was a guy in Florida that was making a thermo clutch from a Jaguar XJ6 unit. The fan was about $45, met all the specs to marry the 6 blade Studebaker fan to it EXCEPT that the pilot hole had to be drilled bigger. I went through this exercise, the machining cost me $40 to have done and then I found out that this would NOT work on my Lark. It only works on a hawk or Avanti. Ther is not enough room on the Lark, as it does nto use the spacer with the clutch. The XJ6 clutch added 1/2 inch and so would hit my radiator with the fan on it. I had to go back to the non-thermo clutch. This does work of for the Hawk/Avanti, just not the Lark.

you can get dimensions for alternative fan clutches at Hayden.com, they make alot of fan clutches, both thermo and non-thermo. Just none that would work for my Lark unfortunately. My next options is to maybe have the nose of the water pump milled down to try GM type clutch, but that will be later.

    Good luck!

I installed an 18", seven blade clutch fan from a 1976-82 Corvette mounted in a 62GT. Gas mileage went up about 2 MPG, and fan noise went down several decibels from the 6 blade flex fan it replaced. It is the quietest that car has ever been at road speed.
