'53 turn signal indicator light problems.

Ok. The solution to the following problems have cost me three days, bouncing my forehead off the emergency brake (pointy) end... twice... blood, scar, possible (slight I hope) brain damage, so if this saves you the same, here goes.

I had three problems on this great 6V, + ground car:

    1. My green lenses had both fallen off.

    2. I would get a initial bright flash on the indicators, and then, they would both get dim, but still both flash.

    3. Turn left or right and everything on the outside worked fine but, [u]both indicators </u> flashed!?!?!?

    Solutions:

    1. I found a vitamine bottle at my local store that was the exact same green, used hobbie shop super glue, let it flash-off, cleaned'em, reinstaled. Perfect.

    2. Replaced the old flasher with a new one. I had an older "Wagner" heavy-duty one and it took to much voltage to flash it.

    3. The new (three prong 6V) flashers, that I seem to be able to buy, flash all three outputs. My shop manual shows: an input from the ignition switch, one wire going to the turn signal switch and two wires going to the indicators and then through the front turn signals, then to ground.

The fix is to cap-off the two wire flasher out-put, let the turn signal switch send the pulse to the front turn signal lights, tapped-off through the indicators, and ground the indicators second wire. Left will flash Left and Right will flash Right!

The only explaination for this that I have is: The new flashers use the two wire out-put for emergency flashers and the old flashers were wired in a different manner?

    Hope this helps someone...

Sounds like it would be way easier to just buy the correct 6V, three prong flasher for turn signals!

You may not have a stop light in turn mode.

But I [u]do</u> have a stop light in the turn mode!

If you know what the maker and part number of "the correct one" is, please let me know! I'm now the pissed-off collector of 6 flashers purchased off the net, local-old time-parts houses, one I got at Lancaster from SASCO and I even have one from Sac. Vintage Ford. All of them told me they were the correct one... and they all work the same.

Well then, I guess I need to test one my Studebaker vendor 6V flashers and see if two of the 3 leads have flashing power when the third is powered up with 6 Volts!

If they are supposed to be that way, Studebaker would have to have wired the front and Indicator lights separate from the rears and I don't know what that says about your car if it will not work correctly, always flashing both dash indicators!

There has to be a non-flashing power input on one of the three, and two flashing outputs one for indicators and front and one for rears, is what common sense tells me. There should be no ground, since that is accomplished at the lights.

A ground wire from the back of the intrument panel to somewhere on the firewall may help.
