... are red hot
for most of the race. They get thrown away after that race rather than
resurfaced for the next race like on a track where the brakes aren't
used so hard.
I even hot spotted a set of "stainless" rotors on my motorcycle one day
playing with a coupla guys coming down Angeles Crest Highway (outside
Los Angeles) one day. and as in any other hot spotted brake
part...they were throw aways.
I do have some materials background, so when I did my own rotors, I
knew exactly what happened and why.Forgot your last question -
Drilling out the hard/hot spots.......ABSOULTLY, DEFINATLY NOT.
1. If you try to drill just the hot spot, you'll have a really hard
time getting the drill to go thru.
2. If you somehow manage to get thru with a simillar size drill ...
... When I pressed on the brakes the right front locked
up. I could only get it to release by backing up a little. I pulled the
drum thinking it was (1) grease leaked on the lining, (2) brake fluid leaked
on the lining, or (3) the return spring was broken. It turned out to be
none of the above. Everything was clean and hooked up properly. I guess I
should suspect the wheel cylinder, but it was sleeved with brass a few years
ago at Whitepost and I have silicon fluid in the system. I have the
original self-adjusting brakes that were used through '53 (yeah I know, I
should use later brakes or Turner brakes).
Any ideas?

after I put wheel/hub/drum back on, it didn't ...
A couple of weeks I posted about helping a guy get a 65 6 cyl Stude back on
the road. While being towed to his house the rear shoe on one side was
rusted/stuck to the drum, and the star wheel adjuster and the 2 wire self
adjusting brake rods got mangled. He has new cylinders and shoes. People
from the NG said they were available at my local FLAPS, and yes indeed the
local NAPA store had the Star Wheel Adjuster in stock (Made in China, but I
was glad to find it), but they, and the other FLAPS that has been in
business for many years and still has all the old 60's era paper catalogs
and knows old parts/cars, do not have, and ...
... drum brakes? I need this for x-ref at auto parts places. Their books
do not list "Studebaker"
2. what is the part number for the nut that connects the brake line to
the brake backplate? This was rounded and I "finished" the process.
3. what is the part number of the bleeder? It is missing. I found the
following, is it right? <197097 Bleeder Screw>
Thanks! For the "nut" that is a standard tube nut, but you should probably
replace that whole section of line (not difficult) the rear shoes are
#173 and unfortunately I don't have a part number for the bleeder screw.
check the interchange on my web site for part numbers for other little

may be a difference in the 'insertion' depth of the pinion gear. I will also
have to closely compare the pinions gears.

... push rod from the booster to the master
cylinder is, indeed, floating so don't loose it either.
On the cop car and the convertible I have converted to a dual circuit
system. I think that on the convertible I used the 69 Nova drum brake
master cylinder and on the cop car I used the 71 Mopar 'Cuda body disc
brake master. Has been a couple years so my memory may be a bit fuzzy
on the exact master cylinders used. They are, however, both 2-bolt
masters and go right on the 4-bolt brake booster units.

En route to a Stude meet today I was told I had no brake lights.
Is there a parts-store universal switch number I can use that anyone is

I have power drum brakes and use plain old DOT 3 fluid which I have

... to keep out road water?
TonyThere will be a notice in the next couple of days about new HD flanged axles
for the Dana 44.
TedVery cool. And I just received a TT rear end too. If I did need
the upgrade I could still use the stock rear brake drum and hub?
Back to my origonal question. Should I put a bead of sealent around
the hub where it meets the drum before I press them back together? My
instinct is to make sure no rain water gets inside the brake when the
wheels rotate.
TonyUse the stock drums but will not use the hub. Flanged part takes the place of
the hubs.
Do not need any sealant.
TedNo, no sealant. and I am somewhat confused because the hubs need to be
staked to the drum with a staking tool and lots of hydraulic pressure.
Take a look at a NOS.Maybe they need to ...
I have a 59 Lark with 9" rear drums that are shot and I'd like to
interchange them with the same size, but from a newer brand X late
model car. Does anyone know what other cars on the road today, have
brake drums with the same bolt pattern, that will interchange with my
Lark? I'd like to keep using the Larks same wheels.Seems like it would be simpler just to buy new 9" Lark drums.
Paul JohnsonEven good used drums are everywhere, from folks that upgrade to bigger
V8 drums.

I am working towards getting my 64 Wagonaire roadworthy.
This car was originally a 6cyl car with a 3speed trans.
The six was removed and replaced with a 259 v/8 out of a 64 Lark, along
with the trans.
The brakes are still the six cyl issue.
I am converting the fronts to (Turner) disc-brakes.
My question is, can I use the backing plates and drums from a 63 lark
v/8 car that I parted out years ago?
I'd swap the whole rear-end, but the 63 was an automatic, thus gear
ratio issues.
Or, should I try to find a v/8 rear-end with the right gearing and swap
the whole thing?
The springs are going to be changed at a later date..

Hi, all:
Does anyone have an NOS set of brake and clutch pedals for my 57

ThanksRBK,
The only number that I have is 537288. I don't remember where I got it
from. Thanks, Flathead.I would think that SASCO would have these items as they are not in high
demand and seldom fail.

Here is a link for a dual brake master cylinder. There are several part

this as the recommended part #. This guy usually has more then one so
don't get excited and bid them high.

Hello all-
I am changing out my front drums to disk brakes using a Turner brake
kit. This is on my 1962 Hawk GT. Installation has been a snap so
far. To put the hubs onto the spindel I need to install the new
wheel bearings. How they fit is ... on a small amount of runout in the rotor to
"knock" the pads back so they don't drag, hence you back off the
spindle nut the 3 flats after reaching the applicable torque on the
bearing.
I've seen for myself brake drag in disc brake equipped cars where this
rule was ignored. It's for real.
Gord RichmondOddly enough I got a call yesterday from the shop troubleshooting the
vibration problem on my Porsche... wanted to sell me new front wheel
bearings because they were "a little loose." ...
im looking for disk brake on my 50 champ what are the choice i have ?Turner brake kits are for 53-64... I'm not sure if he could swap
spindle parts to satisfy the Turner requirements. Would 53 spindles fit
a 50 kingpin?I think they'll slip right on Bob! I know that Jim said someone else has
done it, but I think he says it needs a heavier brass bushing.
SonnyYep, my kit will fit pre 53, but, a thicker bronze bushing is needed on the
Champions, as the kingpin is skinnier, (like I wish I wuz) <G>
Jimkeep in mind he also makes a dual master cylinder kit for the pre-53's also.
... fit the 10X2 and 9X2 shoes
for front and rear respectively. The rear shoes require 36 #4 rivets
(a Grey Rock number?) and the fronts require 40 #4-41/2
Anybody here know where I can get these? I'll check my local supplier
in the morning. I'll also have to buy or borrow a rivet set.
I've made some progress lately on the '53. Got all four brake
assemblies sandblasted and POR-15ed. Cleaned all the grunge off the
front part of the frame and suspension, and got it nearly all coated
with POR-15, back as far as the clutch pivot shaft, anyway. There are
a few patches I'll have to go back and touch up, because I more or
less painted myself into a corner, and left spots I couldn't reach
without leaning on wet paint. Once it's dry, I can finish it off
pretty readily. It ...
I just installed the Turner Deluxe Brake kit on the front of my '63 GT
Hawk. The precision of the components made it practically install
itself. Truly "High Holy Hardware" compared to the original Stude disk
brakes that were on it but....even though I was running what I feel
sure are the original 15" X 5 1/2" Stude rims, when I put them on they
rubbed against the calipers.
All options considered, I think I should find some rims that work.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
DougYou should probably get some 15" x 6" rims that are available from a
number of sources. One is Bob Helm in TX, his # is 972-843-4302. The
part number is: 40273 for National Wheel & Rim Association and 82552
for Hayes Wheels.

I thought that title would make you look. <g>
I was about to place an order on the Turner Brake website when I noticed
the little padlock was not in the bottom righthand corner of the screen.
Doesn't that mean she website is not secure? I'd rather not send my credit
card info on an unencrypted web site.
RBSo call Jim and give it to him over the phone.
He'd like to gat a call.....
He's like the Maytag repairman sometimes <g>..
I had occasion to recently locate the Wagner numbers for some Stude
brake parts. Here are the part #'s for the 11" front drum brakes on a
'64.
Wheel Cylinder (front) - Wagner 19236
Brake hose (front) - Wagner 24070Shamelessly stolen, thanks.

My Speedster came with power brakes. I assume they all did. When I got the
rusty wreck, the booster was gone and it was plumbed up without it. The
brakes did not work. The car is now apart in a million pieces and I'm
getting ready to put it back together. I bought a Turner kit to put a dual
master cylinder on it. My plan is to put it together with all new brakes
etc, but of course without power brakes. The parts book shows different
brake pedals for cars with and without power brakes. I have no idea which
pedal I have. Are the pedal dimentions different for power and standard
brakes?
Thanks
BillAyup, the standard pedal has more travel and more mechanical advantage.
I think ECI makes a dual hydrovac style booster if you wanna go that
route, or if you want to stick ...
Anyone know the interchange # for a new master cylinder from NAPA for
